Concrete Waterfall
I’ve finally put up my latest project ‘Concrete Waterfall’. Due to be exhibited at the Artrix in 2011, its been a long term personal project of exploration and discovery about living in the countryside near the Motorway. A departure from my usual style, I originally wasn’t going to do anything with the work but after sequencing and editing over 500 photos, the resulting...

You should look at......
I was thinking the other day, not that I normally don’t think and just sit around all day gazing at butterflies, but….. When people see your work do they say: “Ooh that looks like Roger Dodgers work, you should have a look at his stuff”. I know this is intended as helpful and I’m sure looking at people who create similar work to you, gives you an insight into...

Exposing yourself
I have a project on at the moment, well it’s in the final edit stages, and I’ve been looking at opportunities to ‘get it out there’. As well as a nearby arts centre (the project has local connections) I have been looking at the idea of exhibiting it some more interesting public spaces. My reasoning for this is twofold - firstly I want people to see the work because I’ve...

No.
Another meeting last night for the Contact the exhibition at Birmingham Central library. Before I joined the photography Collective I’d never been in the Library and my first visit was a strangely mesmerizing and disorienting experience mainly because of the wonderful escalators that seem to channel their way deep into the depths of an industrial machine of a dystopian future. This week I...

Ale Review 01
I was very lucky to have tried some fine home brew the other week. Brewed by the lovely JimmyPhoto who I have had the good fortune to meet through The Photography Collective (more about that in just a min). I thought i would give it a litle review as, well it was jolly nice. It was refreshing to drink something from a bottle with no label for a start, giving me a different level of anticipation...

Frame/Mount sizes - arent they wrong?
Well, I was going to have a tittleritttle rant about this myself but seems someone else had the bright idea too - why are mount/frame sizes based on old view camera sizes and digital aspect ratios? http://www.scottkelby.com/blog/2010/archives/11698 I wonder if anyone is listening apart from the avid stream of Scott’s followers?

Negative
Its always a bit demoralising getting negative feedback. Is it easier to give positive or negative comments? I think depends on if you find it easy to identity what you like in something or what you don’t like. Admittedly I’m of the later. Although it makes me feel a little sick now, I’m sure it will do me good in the long run. ’ Make me stronger’ and all that. Its...

Hot Photos
Well its been a hot, muggy week, especially in the loft studio… … but I have done some new work which is good. Good that I’ve done some work, I’m not sure if the work is good yet, its still only some tests really. Its for an upcoming exhibition for the Photography Collective that I am part of, at Rhubarb Rhubarb gallery in Digbeth. Should be a great mix of work from some...

This has been doing the rounds for ages but is now slipping past the gates of doom (The House of Lords). Of course democra(z)y should (theoretically) allow us folk to protest and change something so fundamental no? I think this will be the first time I will write to an MP, after all this is part of my livelihood and they are effectively saying I cant make a living from it anymore. I wonder if I...

a single image
Late last night I was ruffling through my image library looking for an image, a single image to enter a competition. This in a strange way was quite new to me as the last year or so I’ve only thought about series. This is partly based on good advice on getting into the fine art world but I realised maybe in doing so I’d ignored hundreds of photos I’d taken. This made me...

stock or not
I dipped a toe into stock today (results as yet un-known) and got a little confused. What makes a stock image and what doesn’t? Having a large catalogue of as yet unused images and fighting usually for arts sake I wasn’t sure if anything was stock or not. Was preparing to be branded with hot irons on my hide a good idea or should I look at this as last resort? Can I judge my photos...

snow experimentation
So in the UK we recently had some of the best or worst snow for a long time (depending on your situation). For many photographers the opportunity to actually get chance to take some snow pictures was very rewarding. I couldn’t help myself from taking a nice walk (or 2), camera along for the ride, but was bugged by thought that probably hundreds of other photographers were doing the same...

A costly year for reward You have to speculate to accumulate and again this year I will be entering an array of competitions/awards of my latest and still in development photo projects, however at £20-60 each it starts to add up if there is no reward. This link collates most competitions although you have to sift through to find the more contemporary opportunities - I will try to post my own...
